A sunny weekend with steady fishing on the lake, early-season maiden fish in great condition, and a shift towards summer fly fishing tactics.

Well it looks as though the weather is going to play ball this weekend with the forecast being sunshine all long weekend. Very mild winds for Saturday at 4-6knots, Sunday stays warm and sunny and wind picks up to 7-8 knots, and Monday drops back a couple of knots for the whole day. Rain comes from Tuesday onwards.

Fishing on the lake has been really quite steady considering we are so early in the season. What has been surprising over the past couple of weeks are the number of stunning condition maiden fish being caught. You can expect a mixture of returning kelts among the catch which is quite normal for this time of the year. Harling first thing in the morning with trolling and jigging during the day offering the most consistent sport.

Fly fishing is in its transitional tome of the year from winter runs to summer tactics. The local rivers had a bit water coming through to encourage some good backend winter runs to squirt through. Those levels should be receding nicely in time for this weekend so I would say most methods would work. You can fish the pools with winter wetline or traditional nymphing but for me it is dry/dropper time from now on. I am always on the lookout for these early mayfly hatches that can be huge at this time of the year. We have already had some great sport locally fishing the dry/dropper method through the shallower riffles and have quite a few up for the dry already.

Browns are now making their appearance known and can be seen feeding along the edges if you are careful with your approach.

We will be full on with our annual tent display at Taupo-nui-a--Tia college grounds but on the whole we are looking forward to seeing you all and enjoying the great Taupo outdoors.

Tight lines to all, have a great weekend.

From the team at Fly & Gun Hunting and Fishing.
